Procrastination...

Postby Cat » Sun Feb 07, 2010 9:24 pm

So, it's pretty much obvious that if I didn't procrastinate, my life would be easier, more stress free, less time spent saying 'oh, I can't go out I've got that essay to write' probably less time bullshitting to tutors/parents/stressed people about how much work I've done... I would probably get better grades, have more work I'm actually proud of and a better chance of being able to fulfill my goals and get to where I want to be in life...

So, someone please explain to me why, despite knowing all this, I still spent the entirety of today reading the new scientist, the new quantum universe, darwin's origin of species, (all utterly unrelated to an art course) and window shopping for army surplus clothing, and amazing underwear (which I could never afford) online... And why I did all this when I genuinely care weather or not I get into the uni who are supposed to be reviewing my portfolio on Wednesday...

So, someone please explain to me why,

I honestly can't. Really. For me it's a comfort zone thing. I mean, not sure if it's the same for you, but over the years I've become exceptionally adept at convincing myself that everything is okay if I just think it is. Especially when it's clearly not. Call it running away from your problems if you must, it's just a means by which I always find myself coping with boring shit that has to be done. I get into my own comfort zone, which used to be smoking a joint, and is now mainly playing too many video games. It's a way to shut down and completely ignore the issue in the subconscious hope of it dissipating in thin air, which of course, it never does. In your case, it's reading or doing anything else but what you need to do.

The answer is plain and you've heard it a gazillion times before, but just sit down and do it. What does it involve? Try and make it enjoyable in your mind (this can be applied to even the worst case scenarios) so that it is no longer just something you have to do, but something beneficial and at least attractive in one way. That way it will hopefully, in your mind, cease to be the thing you're avoiding and become something you're incentivised to tackle. Though at the same time this is just another way of lying to yourself, because no matter how many advantages you see in it you're still going to know it's boring ass shit that needs to get done.

I'm not sure what works for you guys. I know that if I ever sit down and contemplate doing something it will never, ever get done. The contemplation will eventually lead to the sizing up of reasons why and why not, and we all know the reasons why not are always going to carry more weight in our own minds. The only way I get stuff done is to just go for it, no questions asked, no thinking how shit it's going to be, just nail it straight away. So if that means doing work tomorrow, I have to get up and just get straight to it without a second thought.

My sympathies go to you.. I have a similar daily struggle with what seems right now like too many things that deserve a little more attention.
